FSU Dedman School of Hospitality names director of its Panama City program

The Dedman School of Hospitality announces the appointment of Jason P. Lafferty, former program director of the hospitality management and culinary arts programs at the Art Institute of Indianapolis, as director of its new program at the Florida State University Panama City campus.

Lafferty will serve as administrative leader for the campus’ hospitality management program, which will begin classes in fall 2017. He will establish internship and career opportunities for students by building relationships with area industry leaders and will teach undergraduate hospitality courses.

“We are grateful to have Jason join us as we expand our hospitality management program to the Panama City campus,” Don Farr, director of the Dedman School of Hospitality, said. “He will work to provide local students with the education and experience needed for successful careers managing top hotels, restaurants, resorts and clubs.” 

Lafferty is currently completing a Doctor in Education in higher education administration at the University of Southern California. He earned a Master of Science in hospitality management at Florida International University and holds a Bachelor of Science in food service management and an Associate in Applied Science in culinary arts from Johnson and Wales University.

With more than 20 years of experience in both the operations and food and beverage sides of the hospitality industry, Lafferty’s resume boasts many award-winning establishments throughout the Southeast, including Kiawah Island Resort and Charleston Place Hotel. He has also worked with Food Network personalities and James Beard award-winning chefs.

Prior to taking on his role at the Art Institute of Indianapolis, Lafferty served for four years as program chair and dean at Culinard, The Culinary Institute of Virginia College, in Mobile, Ala. He has also served as a clinical instructor of hospitality at the University of Mississippi.

Lafferty’s research interests include advanced leadership training through the use of learning management systems; annual events and their impact on local tourism, lodging and restaurants; and, sustainability in the hospitality industry.
