The Dedman College of Hospitality at Florida State University continues to expand its international reach with the recent arrival of visiting professor, Dr. Peter B. Kim, from Auckland University of Technology. Originally from South Korea, Dr. Kim brings a wealth of global experience to the classroom, enriching students with insights from a career that’s taken him across the United States, New Zealand, and beyond.

Dr. Kim’s passion for hospitality was ignited by his father, whose career in an international hotel exposed him to the dynamic energy of the industry at an early age. Inspired by this exposure, he pursued a career in hospitality, earning a master’s degree in hospitality management from Ohio State University and a Ph.D. in hospitality and tourism management from Virginia Tech.

It was at Virginia Tech that he embraced the institution’s motto, Ut Prosim (“That I may serve”), a guiding principle that continues to shape his approach to teaching and leadership. This philosophy deeply resonates with his faith, which has been a driving force in both his personal and professional life. His commitment to service is rooted in his belief that hospitality extends beyond business—it is about uplifting and connecting with others.

Before transitioning into academia, Dr. Kim held management roles at globally recognized hotel chains, including Park Hyatt, Sofitel, Marriott, and Westin. His industry experience spans diverse cultural settings, shaping his expertise in service management, marketing, leadership, and organizational studies. As a faculty member in New Zealand, he contributed significantly to research efforts, serving as Co-Leader of the Pacific Tourism Data Initiative (PTDI) Research Team, which promotes evidence-based decision-making in Pacific tourism. Additionally, his editorial work with the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research and leadership within the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) further underscore his commitment to advancing global hospitality education.

Faith has played an integral role in Dr. Kim’s journey, shaping his values and reinforcing his dedication to mentorship. Since his teenage years, his spiritual foundation has guided his mission to serve others. His international experiences were further enriched by faith-driven initiatives, including mission trips that exposed him to diverse cultures and deepened his appreciation for global hospitality. These experiences reinforced his belief that true leadership is rooted in humility and the desire to positively impact those around him.

Now at Dedman, Dr. Kim brings his global perspective to Florida State University, where he shares his expertise through guest lectures and mentorship. While he does not teach a dedicated course, he contributes to the college’s curriculum by engaging with students in event management and human resource management classes, emphasizing leadership principles crucial to success in the hospitality industry.

“My goal is to inspire students to take ownership of their learning,” said Dr. Kim. “Hospitality is more than a profession—it’s about building relationships, understanding cultural nuances, and developing character. I want to encourage students to challenge themselves and strive for personal and professional growth.”

Dr. Kim’s teaching philosophy extends beyond technical knowledge, prioritizing mentorship and accessibility. He believes that genuine leadership stems from gratitude, humility, and the ability to inspire others. His faith remains a cornerstone of his approach, emphasizing service, integrity, and the importance of fostering meaningful connections. His advice to aspiring hospitality professionals? Trust yourself, serve others, and success will follow.

Dr. Kim is eager to support Dedman students exploring international opportunities, particularly those interested in internships in New Zealand. As he continues his tenure at FSU, he looks forward to shaping the next generation of hospitality leaders and fostering a globally minded learning environment at Dedman College.
